The Improv Challenge: An Introduction
#improvchallenge #experiencelife
Improvisation is a life skill — it helps us accept the opportunities around us and turn disappointments into small victories. It’s a way to hold on to the roller coaster called life and dodge a heart attack when it zips through an unexpected curve. I was first introduced to improv as a college freshman and it absolutely changed my worldview — it opened doors that I never knew existed and gave me the strength to take life events and challenges in stride throughout my education. When I left college, I left with a couple of diplomas, an optimistic soul, and some of my favorite books to date, including “Improv Wisdom,” a book with improv exercises for everyday life written by Patricia Ryan Madson.
Now, as I finally look towards the conclusion of my professional degree, I’d like to take the time to reflect on the moments I implemented the improvisation exercises Ms. Madson recommends and challenge myself to keep implementing them in the future. As George Gershwin once said, “Life is a lot like jazz — it’s best when you improvise.” Here’s hoping to hear some beautiful music as I embark on my very own improv challenge.
